The garden at Blakesley

William Blake House has been astounded by the generosity of both the time and money that have been donated to our community this year.

We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the amazing people that recently participated in two separate team fund-raising events - a 10km run (the Thames Path Challenge), which took place in September and an 80 mile cycle ride (Bath to Reading) that happened in October.  The Sensory Room Project at William Blake House was chosen as the beneficiary of all funds raised by the challenges that they undertook; we would like to congratulate them on their incredible achievements and thank them and their supporters for their extreme kindness.

Sensory Room

As a provider of person centred care, we have many residents who would benefit greatly from the use of a sensory room; an area where they can relax, have the opportunity to develop their gross motor skills, communicate, improve their engagement and reduce their anxiety.  We are fundraising to create this specially designed room for our residents, which would combine a range of stimuli (lights, colours, sounds, sensory soft play objects, aromas) to help our residents develop and engage their senses, and to explore and interact in a safe environment.

The Thames Path Challenge (Henley 100km) - September 2017

The brothers of one of our residents took part in the Thames path Challenge.

It is so wonderful that the family of one of our residents is supporting William Blake House in this way and also that they feel so positive about the care their brother receives in his home within our community.

Cycle Ride (Bath to Reading) - 7th & 8th October 2017

Eight ladies (one of whom is the sister-in-law to one of our residents), who had heard of William Blake House and the Sensory Room Project, were motivated to cycle 80 miles from Bath to Reading; this truly astounded us.

We cannot convey how much we appreciate that they chose William Blake House as the beneficiary of the funds raised from their cycle ride (which was not the flat based journey that had been anticipated!).

The Sensory Room Project will now be pushed forward at a far greater speed due to the astonishing donations raised by the run and the cycle ride events.

It is truly heart-warming and overwhelming to see how the home and the sensory room project have been embraced by others; the generosity that has been shown is amazing and we cannot thank everyone enough.

Garden Project

William Blake House is fundraising for its Garden Project, for its creation and longer term upkeep.  Our residents so very much enjoy being outside, whether they are socialising, relaxing, or being active, and we want to ensure that we can provide an area in which they can do all of this, but also somewhere where they can look after animals (such as chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs), plant and tend flowers and shrubs in raised beds, grow fresh produce from their own vegetable patch and harvest this food for their home.  We also want to create a sheltered area, so that the garden can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

We envisage our garden being filled with wonderful things to see, smell and feel.  A place within the community to be enjoyed, to be stimulated; somewhere that our community can be together, feel empowered and valued.

Here is a short video made by the parents of one of our residents, showing the progress we’ve made in our beautiful garden.

These projects are very close to our hearts and any support or assistance that we receive would be immensely beneficial in helping us bring these projects to fruition and thereby enhancing the lives of our residents.
